Altoids Tin DIY Ideas: Turning Mint Tins Into Tiny Useful Cases
For this project, I turned empty Altoids tins into three tiny, useful, and creative storage ideas. Instead of throwing the tins away, I transformed them into an everyday essentials wallet, a mini UNO travel case, and a small microphone case for my creator setup. Each tin had a completely different purpose and style, from whimsical junk-art sparkle to practical tech storage.
This was such a fun upcycling project because Altoids tins are the perfect size for tiny items, travel kits, small games, and everyday must-haves. Some ideas were more practical than others, but all three made me want to keep saving mint tins for future DIY projects.
Project 1: Junk Art Essentials Wallet

The first Altoids tin makeover was an everyday essentials wallet, and this is the one I actually use. I wanted it to hold little must-have items like chapstick, allergy medicine, emergency earrings, and other tiny things that usually get lost in a bag.
For the outside, I went for a whimsical junk-art style using supplies I already had. I added pearls around the edge, glued lace around the tin, arranged little charms on top, and filled empty spaces with rhinestones for extra sparkle. The charms were secured with resin, then the whole tin took a long UV nap until everything was solid and locked in place.
Once the outside was finished, I decorated the inside and turned it into something practical. This Altoids tin wallet is a cute upcycled storage idea for small everyday items, and it’s a great way to combine useful organization with a decorative, handmade look.
Project 2: Mini UNO Go-Box

The second project was a tiny UNO travel case that fits inside an Altoids tin. This idea worked surprisingly well because the mini cards fit neatly inside the tin, making it easy to take a full game on the go.
I started with a black base so the UNO colors would stand out, then added rhinestones because apparently I cannot resist sparkle. For the inside, I made colored paper inserts inspired by the classic UNO color palette: yellow, red, green, and blue. After fitting the inserts into the tin, I sealed them so everything would stay in place.
I also trimmed part of the UNO card box so it would fit better inside the tin, then freehanded a simple UNO-inspired design on the lid. The finished mini UNO Go-Box is compact, colorful, and perfect for travel, road trips, waiting rooms, or keeping a tiny game in your bag just in case.
Project 3: Creator’s Microphone Case

The third Altoids tin makeover was the most practical for me as a creator: a tiny microphone case. My microphone setup came with several small pieces, and I was constantly worried about losing them. An Altoids tin ended up being the perfect size to keep everything together.
This project took some trial and error. I first tried to make holes the easy way, but that did not work, so I brought out the drill. Drilling from the inside out helped make the elastic holder work better because the rougher edges could be covered later. Once the holes were drilled, I threaded elastic through the tin so each microphone piece could stay securely in place.
I also saved the instructions inside because I know I will forget how everything works later. To make the outside cute, I added foam clay and painted it with a YouTube-inspired design. The paint ended up being a little too thick, which made the tin hard to open at first, but after some peeling and adjusting, it finally worked. Now every tiny microphone piece has a place, and that alone makes this project worth it.
Final Thoughts
This Altoids tin upcycle project was such a fun way to turn something ordinary into something creative and useful. The junk art essentials wallet became the prettiest everyday carry option, the UNO Go-Box was the most fun, and the microphone case was the most practical for my YouTube setup.
I love that each tin had its own purpose and personality. These little mint tins may seem like trash at first, but they are perfect for DIY wallets, tiny travel games, mini organizers, craft storage, and creative cases. After making these three, I definitely want to keep experimenting with more Altoids tin ideas.
